There has been a shift in public attitudes towards some aspects of medical technology, particularly genetic modification, from general acceptance of new advances to some distrust. So far, there has been very little research to find out what the attitudes of the general public towards xenotransplantation really are. The fear of science’s impact on society was witnessed in panels for the UNESCO’s agenda for science.
In fact, the relationship between science and society is in a critical phase. There is no effectiveness of knowledge transmission, from the expert to the lay public. This perspective was recently challenged in Euro-barometer study. There are several studies where concepts such as “public engagement in science” and “scientific citizenship” are underlined as important elements of the new science communication landscape. For xenotransplantation, these issues are of great importance but we must not simplify them as they are complex.
For Xenome, the challenge is to manage this complexity and enter into a dialogue with the stakeholders. It has been suggested a way forward by opening up the dialogue between scientists and society. However, we need to understand the philosophical and social context within which scientific endeavor takes place. What is needed is good governance, acquired through building on what we call scientific citizenship. It is necessary to begin this not only with the training of the citizens but also with the scientists themselves.
Xenome aims to provide an innovate platform for dialogue on issues referred to xenotransplantation. It is important to create a “space” for the emergence of a scientific citizenship. In this regard, one of the tasks of this project is to achieve appropriate social dissemination of the different issues involved in xenotransplantation. The central objective is to study how information on this field is disseminated to society. Different ways of involving people on this subject has been studied. As soon as we have some definitive results, they will be added to this web page.
